Golf Courses

Lookount Mountain Gallery presents Follow The Sun, an exhibition of golf photographs by Robert Matre.   His photographs, primarily black & white and sepia-toned prints, have an artistic quality that separates him from popular sports photographers

Follow The Sun references the 1951 film classic starring Glenn Ford as Ben Hogan.  In theory, professional golf tours “follow the sun” throughout the year in order to compete in the best possible weather conditions, and Robert Matre is often there with his camera.  The title is also relevant to Matre’s process, as the position of the sun is of paramount importance to golf photography.

His travels have taken him to some of the most historic courses in America, including Merion, Shinnecock Hills, Riviera and Augusta National, just to name a few.  He has been credentialed at every level of professional and amateur golf, including U.S. Opens at Winged Foot, Oakmont and Torrey Pines, the U.S. Women’s Open at Interlachen, the Senior PGA Championship at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island and The Tour Championship at East Lake.

Robert Matre is primarily a fine-art photographer, but his images have been featured in various publications, including Golf Georgia, Travel + Leisure Golf and the website for Australian golfer Adam Scott.  His list of corporate collections includes Coca-Cola, King & Spalding and Ernst & YoungGolf Viewing, a major retrospective of 83 prints from 2003 - 2009, was presented by The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art in the Spring and Summer of 2009.

Follow The Sun is presented in conjunction with The Jordan Thomas Foundation, with a percentage of sales being donated to the foundation.  In fact, one of Matre’s favorite photographs features Jordan Thomas (photo above, video below) from last year’s JTF charity golf tournament.
