2008 Georgia Amateur Championship

This photograph represents what is on the mind today of the 156 players who will tee it up in the first round of The Open Championship, not whether or not Tiger Woods and Kenny Perry are in the field.

Geoff Shackelford provides a great filter for all of the stories coming out of Royal Birkdale and Daniel Wexler explains why this is  "the major major championship."  Stan Awtrey in The AJC takes a look at the ten players with Georgia connections.

In his local golf report, Awtrey notes that Bulldog stars "Harris English and Russell Henley are helping restore the importance of the Georgia Amateur Championship for their generation of competitors" and that "both have already promised to play in next year's Georgia Am at the Country Club of Columbus."  That's great news for photographers who happen to be covering that event!

Hometown hero Russell Henley won the perpetual trophy of the 2008 Georgia Amateur Championship with a one stroke victory over fellow Georgia Bulldog and 2007 Champion Harris English.  2003 Champion David Noll, Jr. of Dalton finished two strokes back.  Henley's 270 total broke the tournament record held by Tommy Aaron and Allen Doyle.

GSGA.org features a final round summary and final leaderboard.

Stan Awtrey in the AJC says that "the scene at the 18th green was one Russell Henley had dreamed a thousand times."

In the Macon Telegraph's excellent coverage, Jonathan Heeter writes that "Macon native Henley overcomes 4-stroke deficit, 2-hour stoppage to win", Coley Harvey writes that Idle Hour is the "home of a champion",  Jay Adams tells us that "under pressure, Henley delivers big comeback" and Michael A. Lough reveals that  Jay Moseley "finds groove away from pack for top final-round score".
